Artist's Description
This is the inside of the Synagogue Mikve Israel-Emanuel which is the oldest synagogue in the continuous use in Western Hemisphere built in 1732. It was a Sephardic Orthodox synagogue until 1964 when it changed to a Sephardic Reconstructionist Synagogue. It is located on the island of Curacao in the Netherlands Antilles. The chandeliers are not lights, but candles that must be lit. The floor is sand and is a reminder of the Sinai desrt and 40 years of wondering. The sand was also used during the inquisition in synagogues for Jews who took the Catholic faith to hide their belief as it helped hide their secret rooms and it muffled the sound of their worship services. This Synagogue continues the practice as a reminder. The pillars have the names of Esther, Leah, Rebecca, and Rachel inscribed on them.
